How To Care Your Microfiber Sofa

A new fiber has been developed which offers durability with easy care. Because of these features, microfiber, as it is known, is a perfect material for sofas. This polyester based fabric is 100 times finer than human hair and so is finely woven as to offer a strength not known in other polyesters. Its close fiber also allows it to absorb color better than most other materials. Because of the polyester base, the color is part of the manufacturing process, and not added on. This results in truer, clearer colors that resist fading. In addition, the fibers leave no lint or dust. They are therefore a perfect solution for anyone who suffers from allergies. Their use in sofas is therefore understandable. since it can offer a fabric that resists stains. is available in very true colors and wipes clean with a cloth if something does spill on it. These lightweight fabrics have previously been used to create articles of clothing, especially outdoor wear, handbags, business cases and cleaning and polishing cloths. Now these unique new fabrics have been introduced into the interior fashion field and are being used for chairs, sofas,bed headboards, and other furniture items.

Microfiber is naturally stain resistant, and so cleaning it is a breeze. You don't even have to coat it with a fabric protection coating such as Scotch Guard. For everyday cleaning, You can lightly roll a lint roller (the sticky paper kind usually used for clothing) over the surface. Light vacuuming will also work. If you feel your microfiber sofa will be subjected to a big risk of stain, you can ask the retailer if stain resistant protection can be added. Otherwise, microfiber can be easily cleaned with a damp cloth and a small amount of mild detergent. If you end up with an oder causing stain such as urine, the odor can be eliminated by adding a little bit of vinegar to distilled water, wetting a cloth, and blotting the stain gently, Then apply baking soda and vacuum thoroughly.

If your microfiber sofa is made of real microfiber, cleaning should be very easy and almost unnecessary since microfiber sloughs off liquid. If it is not real microfiber, it will not clean as easily. If the fabric does become more stained, steam cleaning will work, though professional steam cleaning will yield the best results.

Interior Decorating - 5 Tips For Designing Small Spaces

If you've ever lived in one, you know that small spaces come equipped with their own special regimen of challenges, and it's up to you to come up with crafty solutions. Because of the creative Rubik's Cube they represent, and the amazing makeovers that often result, these have long been some of my favorite spaces to design. Below, I've provided you with 5 essential guidelines to help you clear the decks, so your style will shine!

Cube Footstool

1. Pare down on the number of furnishings, not necessarily the size. People generally think that because they have a small space, they need to purchase small furniture. This is not exactly correct, and frequently leads to what I refer to as "dollhouse syndrome." When you walk into a small space filled with small pieces, your brain says, "Huh, look at all these little things in this cramped little space." When you walk into a small space with a couple of larger pieces, something interesting happens. Now your brain says, "Well! Look at these large pieces on which I can spread out! I must be in a large space!"

Of course, you can't be ridiculous about this. If you live in a studio apartment, a pit sectional with reclining ends is not the answer... sorry. DO make sure that there is plenty of breathing room between the pieces, and that traffic can move easily through the entire space. For most people, a regular sofa and one or two small club chairs will provide ample seating, and you only need enough tables to support your lighting, and be within easy reach to set things down.

2. Light colors vs dark colors: Would-be decorators love to talk about how dark colors make a room look small. *long suffering sigh* Rather than step up on my soapbox, I will simply say that this, too, is not exactly correct. For the sake of this article, I shall simply compare the two options:

Light colors do a wonderful job of reflecting the light, and they move easily from space to space. One way to make a small home feel larger is to paint all the connected areas the same color. This makes it feel like one room flows seamlessly into the next, creating the illusion of more space. Light colors are wonderful in rooms with plenty of natural light. They generally make a room feel cool, airy, and open. Dark colors, on the other hand, make a space feel rich, cozy and intimate. Consider this: if your room is the size of a shoe box, with little to no light, it doesn't matter WHAT color you paint the walls. No one is going to walk in there and say, "Wow! This room feels huge! It must be because you painted it white!" Not gonna happen. So why not embrace a small space for what it is, and make the most of it? Your results will be dramatic.

3. Storage: A place for everything, and everything in its place. If it doesn't have a place, get rid of it. Can't get rid of it? Get rid of something else. Nothing, I repeat: nothing makes a space feel smaller than clutter. If something isn't important enough to you for it to have a proper home, it's not important enough to keep. It's that simple.

To that end, get creative with storage opportunities! Closets aren't the only answer, but we'll start there. If your closet has a shelf on the top and one or two hanging bars, you are living in a different era. Get yourself a closet organizer, and you will, at a minimum, triple your closet's capacity. How about under the bed? How about adding bookcases with attractive baskets? A coffee table or ottoman with great storage? A nightstand with drawers? A shelf that runs around the top 12" of the room for decorative boxes or display? A chest in the entry instead of a table? You get the idea.

4. Lighting: Poor lighting makes a room feel like it's closing in. Everything is dim and shady. Fabrics and colors look dingy. Sounds great, right? Make sure your room has at least three light sources, which is what we call "triangulating." This generally ensures that all objects (and people) are receiving some degree of light from every side, which, unlike the scenario above, makes a space feel warm and inviting. FYI, overhead lighting alone is not generally sufficient, and causes a great deal of eye strain when reading or watching TV.

5. Accessories: Less is more. Please don't cover every table and shelf surface with little this's and that's. No matter how precious they may be, it looks like junk. Choose 1 or 2 large pieces, rather than a larger number of smaller ones. A great vase makes a much more attractive style statement than twelve 4x6 photos in mismatched frames. Further, when accessories are properly displayed, they can be much more appreciated by both you and your guests. If you have many things you love, feel free to rotate them in and out. Every time you bring them back into the room, they'll feel new and exciting!

An Overlooked Feature of Leather Chairs - The Slick Factor

One of the most overlooked factors or features of leather chairs and recliners is what I have coined "the slick factor". The slick factor is a measurement of how slippery a piece of leather furniture is. I used to be a valet attendant and I parked luxury automobiles by the hundreds every day. There were certain vehicles that when you hopped into the driver seat you literally slid right to the back of the leather seat. It felt like your rear end just fell into the chair. This is a feature not common to many leather automobile seats. It is also a feature that is difficult to find in the current leather chairs and sofas.

My only theory as to why it is not present in many leather chairs and recliners is because it is something that is not actively manufactured. I do not believe that the designers consider this factor when upholstering furniture. As a consumer and customer however it is a very important factor. If you are like me and you love this feature it can be frustrating trying to find a sofa or recliner that achieves this and also boasts the other features you want in your chair or sofa.

Next time you are in your favorite leather furniture store, pay attention to the slickness factor of the pieces you are trying out. Also, in order to accurately test this feature of the chair, you must be wearing clothing that promotes the slick factor the best. If you are wearing any kind of corduroy clothing, or any other kind of clothing that is thick or bunchy, you will not slide as much. Try to wear tight fitting clothing like cotton shirts. Even regular denim jeans tend to promote sliding quite well. Another great test is to wear shorts because you can test the slickness factor on human skin. Assuming you are not sweaty at the time, your dry skin should also slide across the leather surface very nicely. If you're the kind of person who enjoys sinking into a puffy leather chair, you may also appreciate the feeling of sliding into the comfort zone of a leather chair or recliner.

The only advice I can offer you in your hunt for slippery leather chairs and sofas is that that harder upholstery tends to have a higher percentage of slippery surfaces. The sofas with puffy cushions tend to not slide as much as the padding engulfs your body parts. The tighter and harder style chair is your best chance of slippery greatness.

Finally it should be pointed out that not all slippery chairs get the click factor right. In some instances the slipperiness will be so severe that upon reclining, instead of your rear end sliding into the comfort pocket, you will continue to slide all the way off the chair until your head is where your bottom should be. Make sure to test your sofa or chair before purchasing. These factors can only known if you personally sit in them. It is very subjective. So be weary before you purchase furniture online before trying it out in person, even if it is a trusted brand you have had good results with in the past.

Architectural Accents and Art: a Retreat from the World

Contemporary classicism is the hallmark of this cozy retreat from the rigors of a busy career and bountiful life. The client is an entrepreneur with a thriving retail and design business. She is also a global traveler, and an art collector. With residences on both sides of the Atlantic, this is her Atlanta base, a townhome in an upscale suburb.

Graced with a deep tray ceiling, and triple windows, the room feels spacious but not vast. A delicious, and practical, wool Berber graces the floor. Using the same subtle gold tone on both the ceilings and walls, wraps the room in warmth and invitation. The bedroom suite is white ash with distinctive architectural detailing, including patinated bronze hardware. Influenced by the Greek and Roman columns, the bedposts provide a stage for rest and relaxation, crowned by a gently oval hoop of brushed bronze as an open canopy. The night stands boast deep drawers for storage of personal effects, a shelf for books, collectibles, and jewelry boxes, and a glass top to lighten and balance the visual weightiness. Lamps are generous in proportion and designed for night reading. Other pieces include an armoire to conceal entertainment and provide additional clothing storage, a bachelor chest, and a master chest with a unique combination of drawers and cabinetry.

The bedding in shades of antique gold, rubbed bronze, subdued silvers, and hints of hazel provides a welcome geometric complement to the strong vertical fluting of the bed posts. A host of pillows dresses the bed, acting as an intriguing counterpoint to the straight lines so prominent. A hand painted lion's face on velvet, silk screened birds, butterflies, and florals on silk backgrounds, hand embroidered gilt threaded tapestry, and pearls on peau de soie, are witness to the clients worldly adventures and buying expeditions. Elegantly simple panel draperies in a richly textured ottoman rib fabric, with velvet banding on the valance, are held in place with multi-toned tassel tiebacks, framing the view of nature beyond. Privacy is provided by soft silhouettes, filtering, but not blocking the brilliant sunlight this East Facing room enjoys. The client is very light sensitive and forgoes the clamor of an alarm clock in favor of being awakened by sun streaming in.

The room reflects a deep personal statement in its artwork. Above the bachelor chest is a hand painted pointillism piece from India on bone, and next to it a page from an ancient illustrated manuscript. Raku vessels in a rare jonquil and rose-hued glaze, join a pair of candle lamps in purples and teals with a dusting of gold. Another corner showcases a grouping of treasures, including an opalescent raku angel, a shimmery ocean blue blown glass vessel, a hand stitched patchwork cube, and an original ceramic work of two faces in a kiss, "Un Beso;" again testament to the client's travels and adventures both at home and abroad. Photographs of family and friends are also incorporated in frames accented with gold, and a selection of silver. A favorite artist, creator of wonderfully unique shadow boxes, is well highlighted with three pieces. Each tells the story of a different destination with a collage of tickets, maps, and visual memories.

Overall a master bedroom custom designed to provide an escape from the daily grind, while optimizing a valued collection of personal mementos and treasures. This is a room that exudes comfort and beckons with relaxation.
